Lydia.com — Meeting in Person, Safely

Member-facing safety guidelines

Why This Page Exists

Lydia™ is built to help real friendships grow—from a message, to a call, to eventually meeting in person. That last step is where trust matters most. This page isn't here to make you anxious about meeting new people. It's here so that when the moment feels right, you have a clear, simple way to do it thoughtfully and safely.

Before You Meet

  • Take your time. There is no rush on Lydia™. A friendship that is real will still be there next week.
  • Healthy friendships develop gradually. Feeling comfortable with someone online does not necessarily mean you know them well in person.
  • Have at least one voice or video call before meeting in person. Hearing someone's voice and seeing their face is one of the simplest ways to build trust before a first meetup.
  • Tell a friend or family member where you're going, who you're meeting, and when you expect to be back. Share your plans and your contact's details with someone you trust.
  • Whenever practical, arrange your first meeting during daylight hours in a busy public place such as a café, restaurant or community event.
  • Leave invitations to either person's home or other private locations until genuine trust has developed.
  • Arrange your own transportation to and from your first meeting. Knowing you can leave whenever you choose gives you greater independence and peace of mind.

During Your First Meeting

  • Keep your phone charged and with you.
  • Consider limiting alcohol so you can make clear decisions and remain aware of your surroundings.
  • Respect personal boundaries. Everyone has different comfort levels, and you should never feel pressured to stay longer than you wish.
  • Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, it is always okay to end the meeting early. You do not owe anyone an explanation.
  • Avoid sharing your home address, workplace or daily routine until you feel genuinely comfortable.
  • If you are meeting as part of a Lydia™ Circle, the same guidance applies—choose a public venue and let someone outside the group know your plans.

If Something Feels Wrong

  • If someone behaves in a way that makes you uncomfortable, pressured or unsafe, leave if you can and contact someone you trust.
  • Use the Report button on the member's profile or within your conversation to alert the Lydia™ team.
  • If you believe you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services first (911 in the United States).
  • You can block any member at any time. This immediately removes their ability to contact you or view your profile.
  • Even if the meeting has already ended, we encourage you to report behaviour that violates Lydia's community standards. Your report may help protect other members.

A Few Honest Reminders

No app, including Lydia™, can guarantee the intentions of every person you meet. What we can do is provide tools, encourage sensible habits and take reports seriously. The rest is the same good judgement you would use meeting anyone new in life—one safe step at a time.
